The Magic of Germany at Christmas:
10 Unforgettable Christmas Market Vacations

The Magic of Germany at Christmas I decided to write The Magic of Germany at Christmas: 10 Unforgettable Christmas Market Vacations to help Christmas travelers to Germany navigate their way around the country and make smart planning choices so they don’t wind up feeling overwhelmed and exhausted by choosing a trip that’s either too ambitious or downright impractical. The aim for any vacation—but especially in Germany during Christmastime–is to feel exhilarated and uplifted.

As I write in the book’s introduction: Because Germany has so many, many markets in so many fascinating cities, choosing an itinerary that works for you is key to a successful visit. I’ve tried to use a common-sense approach in composing the itineraries, taking into account geography, transit connections, travel times, and which cities and markets I feel are the must-sees. For this reason, destinations such as Berlin, Munich and Nuremberg are included more than once.

I came up with the itineraries for the first seven trips, basing them both on firsthand experience and/or knowledge of the German Christmas landscape. The final three itineraries are river cruises, which I didn’t plan but highly recommend, being a huge fan of river cruising.

The itineraries are as follows:

  1. Introducing Germany at Christmas: Munich, Nuremberg, Dresden, Berlin
  2. Bavaria at Christmas: Munich, Rothenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg
  3. Munich Day Trips: Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau, Füssen, Salzburg
  4. Christmas and Culture in the East: Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Erfurt
  5. A Hanseatic Christmas: Hamburg, Lübeck, Bremen
  6. Best of the West: Düsseldorf, Cologne, Aachen, Monschau
  7. Best of the West (Southern Route): Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Baden-Baden, Stuttgart
  8. Christmas Market Cruising on the Rhine
  9. Christmas Market Cruising on the Danube
  10. Christmas Market Cruising on the Main
